Occupational therapy is the practice of assisting people with participation in life roles. Occupational refers to how a person spends their time, and can include self care tasks, pursuit of life roles, employment, and leisure activities. Whenever physical abilities are impacted by illness, injury, or cognitive deficit, a person’s ability to continue pursuing meaningful occupations can be affected. Occupational therapy seeks to identify the deficits present that are limiting full participation, and assist to remediate functional loss.
Occupational therapists focus specifically on self care, upper extremity use, but can address visual deficits, communication differences, and mobility challenges. The goal of treatment is to return a person to their normal life activities with the functional abilities that remain after illness or injury, with an adaptive approach.
Adults can experience any range of difficulties, which can be addressed by occupational therapy. A complete evaluation to meet individual needs is vital to a successful outcome, with a commitment to follow up treatment by the patient.
