From the earliest moments of life, touch is the greatest form of human connection. It is the first interaction a child has after birth, and provides comfort and security. Infant massage is an extension of that connection, meant to foster a strong bond between infant and caregiver, and is beneficial to both.
Many countries across the world view touch differently. Some cultures never put their child on the ground, holding them close at all times. Other cultures only touch their children to meet their basic needs. In the United States, it is increasingly common for children to be placed in carriers, seats, and bouncers. While this may create convenience for parents, it decreases opportunities for bonding to occur. Infant massage is one way to bridge the gap that exists for infant bonding with caregivers.
Children that experience early life trauma or neglect can benefit from infant massage, in that they can experience positive touch. While not all trauma/abuse survivors are candidates for infant massage, for those that can, it can be quite helpful. Children that may have sensory differences may also benefit from infant massage, as it provides a calming touch to the entire body. Children with special needs, or older children can benefit from infant massage, as well.
